Virtual Artist Demonstration: Mary Taggart

Painting in Gouache with Mary Taggart

The GHAA would like to thank Pentucket Bank  for sponsoring our virtual artist demonstration series.

In this demonstration, Mary Taggart illustrates how she paints a landscape using gouache, an opaque watercolor medium.

About Mary:
Mary Taggart is a painter and teacher from Rowley, MA. She has maintained a studio in Wakefield for over 11 years where she teaches and does her own work.

A MassArt graduate, she taught in public schools before leaving to pursue other interests. After a few years, she was reunited with a childhood painting teacher and that returned her to art full time and a mural business. The studio came about naturally as she needed more space and others were asking for art instruction.

Mary returned to MassArt as a painter, studying with Catherine Kehoe, Susan Lichtman and George Nick. These teachers have informed her painting with emphasis on value and color relationships.

Since moving to Rowley, she has also been able to go out paint the beauty of marshes which she has always loved. In the studio she works on still lifes, believing that observational painting is where the magic happens- transforming a three dimensional work onto a two dimensional surface.

She is married and has two grown daughters and two dogs.
