Virtual Artist Demonstration: Doris Rice

Watercolor Painting with Doris Rice

The GHAA would like to thank Pentucket Bank  for sponsoring our virtual artist demonstration series.

In this demonstration, Doris discusses her materials and methods as she paints a landscape in watercolor. Lots of great tips here - be sure to take a look!

From Doris:

“Watercolor: So Much To Learn!

Learning the skill of managing Watercolor comes from good old PRACTICE, PRACTICE......repetition. Painting can become free and loose, once you are familiar with that water-paint mix, using paper, pigment, gravity and water to create the edge and value that you desire.

In this demonstration, we covered mixing color on the paper, making lovely diverse grays. We examined a controlled wet into wet.....and what to do if a drip hastens across the white paper, streaking!

We talked over creating distance, aerial perspective via mountains in background.

And, then, how to bring the work to a finish, lifting off from dark areas, contouring front edges, adding hardwood trees, fence posts and people to focus interest.

It was like getting on a toboggan and breezing down the hill.....fun, fast...and rewarding!

Hope you liked the demo!”
